Jan Tobias--Board Vice-President

Since his retirement from the International Rescue Committee in 2013, Jan Tobias has learned what many retirees experience: there’s not enough time in a 24-hour day, between community service, recreation (tennis and golf), travel and spoiling grandchildren. He tries to fit the latter three in around membership on the Board of Renewing Homes of Greater Augusta, the church Council of Zion Lutheran Church, and the Oratorio Society of Virginia. He enjoys direct service to his community through RHGA home repair projects, the Valley Mission, the Waynesboro CROP Walk and various other community activities. He and his spouse Joy have lived in Waynesboro since 2000, conveniently near, their seven grandchildren and three of their four kids. Prior to working for the IRC, he served in another refugee resettlement agency; as disaster response coordinator in Virginia for Lutheran Disaster Response; and for 25 years as a Lutheran campus pastor.

That experience equipped her with a unique perspective on the importance of community engagement and organizational effectiveness. She continues to maintain her professional certification in Human Resources and has participated in a variety of graduate and professional training programs at Montana State, Virginia Tech, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and other conferences. In addition to her work with RHGA, Kallie is involved in other volunteer and church activities on an ongoing basis.
